7 Daily Habits to Promote Healthier Hair, Skin, & Nails

Hair, skin, and nails - the perfect trifecta of natural beauty. The number of products on the market that are made to enhance all three areas of our beauty regimen can be overwhelming, but it really all boils down to your overall health. Genetics can play a significant role in the appearance and longevity of your hair, skin, and nails. Still, there are various daily habits that you can begin implementing NOW that can steer your beauty routine to the next level. 


Let your hair be in its natural state.

We all want what we don’t have, right? More often than not, that’s the case with our hair! Stray away from hot tools and opt for heatless styles, instead! If you want to play with new colors, try something that isn’t permanent, containing only natural ingredients. 


Keep your skincare routine simple.

The fewer products you use, the fewer ingredients you’re at risk of experiencing a reaction to. The skincare community has made it look super appealing to have an aesthetically pleasing collection of products lined up next to your sink, but that isn’t always the healthiest option for your skin. If you’re an experienced skincare professional or have years of knowledge about ingredients, this rule may not apply to you. However, always remember to cut back on the number of products you use if you ever encounter irritation. 


Take care of your cuticles.

Cuticles provide the greatest amount of protection to the nails. More specifically, they help to protect the tissue that generates new cells (1). So, to continuously grow healthy nails, the cuticle must remain healthy, too. 


Be generous with your SPF application.

Beyond the ingredients that protect you from the sun, all sunscreens need to contain several moisturizing ingredients. With this in mind, make sure that you’re applying enough SPF to cover the entire area that’ll be exposed to the sun. Even though skincare products are thoroughly blended in labs, it’s always better to be generous than not to apply enough. Pro Tip: Apply two layers of SPF, and you’re ready to head outside! 


Avoid bleach and hair dye.

Moisture retention is a telltale sign as to whether or not your hair is healthy. For your hair to hold onto water, the cuticle must stay closed. When you bleach and color your hair, the harsh chemicals cause the cuticle to lift, and dying your hair too frequently can cause the cuticle to be lifted permanently (3). When hair becomes dry and brittle, it is significantly more prone to breakage, splitting, and frizz (2). Plus, damage from bleach and dyes is nearly impossible to recover from. So, embrace your natural color! 


Avoid excessive sun exposure.

Vitamin D is essential for our overall health and mood. However, too much exposure to UV rays can harm the skin. More importantly, sun exposure is the #1 cause of skin cancers. Always remember to apply sunscreen whenever you’ll be outside for long periods of time! 


Don’t keep acrylics on too long.

Nails need to breathe to stay healthy and grow strong. When acrylic nails are glued to your fingertips, it’s impossible for your natural nails to breathe, making them much more prone to breakage once the false tips are removed. It’s also important to note that pulling off artificial nails causes the natural nail to become thinner, leading to splitting and breakage.
